One of my favourite white women friends, Alice, put me on to ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’. Such smart social commentary and brilliantly satirical music videos.
‘All Eyes on Me’ is my favourite as a commentary on our ever increasingly exhibitionistic “platform” culture…but also because it works as a great dance song I would have performed in a night club, on a stage (I’d hired bodyguards to get me on)…in the late nineties…in Japan.
“It’s almost over. It’s just begun.”
He captures the homogenised performative tone of many people (especially those successful at being “famous”) on popular social media platforms (and on other stages).
“Could I interest you in everything all of the time. A little bit of everything all of the time. Apathy is a tragedy and boredom is a crime. Anything and everything. All of the time.” ‘Welcome to the Internet’ – Bo Burnham
You know about my struggle with social media addiction, resulting from our access to excess stimulation which is highly addictive, so I relate to the above video, ‘Welcome to the Internet’. I particularly noted the increasingly frenetic, anxiety-inducing pacing.
