Last Few Months in Photos

Writer: boycemartinboycemartin

I have a good early morning routine in the garden. Birth of a mango tree. My favourite bull – looks like a beast, but he’s a Barney. Rats harvested my sweet potatoes, so I’m focused on herbs and leafy vegetables, or root crops like ginger and turmeric. I looked in the kiss-me-tail bags I’d put over fruits to hide them from the monkeys, and a rat family peeping up at me! My bags had become rat daycare centres! Nature keeps winning! A next rat was like, “Thanks for the bird food, uncle”. If they weren’t rats, I’d have this guy’s approach at the end. I was contracted to do some COVID-related interviews at a few schools, when I noticed the liquid paper graffitied desk. I’ve been glad to see one or two toads. They used to populate a pond close by, but, owing to the extended drought, even weeks after the rains started, there were none. A good friend took me hiking along the banks of Bruce Vale River. Got in the tub, lit some incense and then the candle…which mocked me with its two wicks. Green-throated carib hummingbird. Rose-ringed parakeets, also known as the ring-necked parakeets, visit the golden apple tree every morning and evening and hang out on the electric wires. I’m still doing a catch and release when I see a centipede. Nelson Statue was replaced by a statue of a local artist commonly known as Ninja Man. I survived an entire three months of people expecting me to be who I’m not, for an exceedingly successful capitalist undertaking called Christmas. Finally beat the computer in warri. Pokii Dott made a music video. Found a deceptively sweet (will still cut up yuh mout) dounce tree next door; and, a “no underwear bus crawl” party (Marlon was probably at) has resulted in Barbados’ second lockdown, as well as some amusing dancehall versions of the part of a speech in which a government minister said the word “punnany” on television.
