Barbados still has on the statute books Chapter 154, Section 9 of its Sexual Offences Act, criminalising buggery. This reduces male same-sex partnerships to an illegal sexual act, bolstering opinions resulting in heterosexism and homophobia.
One of the aims of my writing is to increase the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community through my own experiences and, in this way, hopefully help demystify myths, showing that, as human beings, we’re more alike than dissimilar in terms of our basic motivations and need for belonging. To follow is a radio interview in which I speak about two of my short stories. If you enjoy it I hope you’ll consider purchasing my work (My Sister’s Voice and Centipede) as this helps bring attention to an important human rights issue in Barbados. Thank you!
