Normally it’d depend on what you want to see, but since I work here, it depends on when I’m free to accompany you. While there are a host of summer festivals, it’s an oven. And my mental health depends on travel overseas away from the fun things to do in Japan during winter. It’s best to visit during the cooler spring months, specifically during Golden Week. If I take three days off, I get from April 29th to May 9th – 11 days for travel. If you decided to come earlier, I could show you around Echizen-shi until I am free to travel.
The Kansai International airport in Osaka is more convenient, but travel to Tokyo might be cheaper. You should look into getting a Japan Rail Pass to flash so you get discounted train ride rates.
It’s a 3 hour train ride from Osaka on the Limited Express (no transfers). Check out Hyperdia.com for train schedules – helpful from Tokyo, since there will be some transfers. You’ll see how most people don’t speak English an’ de signage is insane.
